Angolan underdogs hold their nerve in Pretoria to eliminate the defending champions on away goals after a 1-1 draw at Loftus Versfeld.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ defence of their CAF Champions League crown came to a stunning end on Friday night as Angolan side Wiliete SC held the South African giants to a 1-1 draw at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, advancing to the group stage on the away-goals rule.
After a goalless draw in the first leg in Angola, the tie finished 1-1 on aggregate. However, Cristovao Paciencia, better known as Mabululu, proved decisive with his second-half equaliser, sending Wiliete through at the expense of the reigning champions.
The result ranks among the biggest shocks of the competition, ending Sundowns’ hopes of retaining the continental title they won in the 2025-26 season.

Matthews Gives Sundowns an Early Advantage
Sundowns made an aggressive start in front of their home supporters, eager to take control of the tie and avoid an upset against their Angolan opponents.
Their positive approach paid off in the 11th minute when Tashreeq Matthews broke the deadlock. The winger unleashed an effort that took a deflection off a Wiliete defender, wrong-footing goalkeeper Elber Delgado before finding the back of the net.
The early breakthrough gave the South African side a valuable advantage and appeared to put them on course for qualification. Sundowns continued to push forward, looking for a second goal that would strengthen their position in the tie.
Wiliete, meanwhile, sought to remain compact defensively and exploit opportunities on the counterattack.
Although Sundowns enjoyed spells of attacking pressure during the first half, they were unable to extend their lead. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was also called into action to deny a dangerous attempt from Miguel Vieira, ensuring that the hosts went into the interval still ahead.

Mabululu Punishes Sundowns’ Costly Mistake
The match took a decisive turn shortly after the restart when a misplaced pass from Sundowns midfielder Cassius Mailula presented Mabululu with an opportunity to strike.
The experienced Angola international capitalised on the error, advancing towards goal before beating Williams in the 49th minute to restore parity.
The equaliser changed the complexion of the contest. With the aggregate score level at 1-1, Wiliete moved ahead on away goals, leaving Sundowns needing another goal to avoid elimination.
The strike also handed the visitors a significant psychological advantage, allowing them to focus on protecting their lead in the tie while forcing the hosts to commit more players forward.
Sundowns responded with sustained attacking pressure and created several opportunities to regain the lead. However, Delgado produced a series of important saves, denying attempts from Marcelo Allende, Brayan Leon and Matthews to keep his side in contention.
The hosts thought they had found a second goal when Leon finished from close range, but their celebrations were cut short after the effort was ruled out for a foul in the build-up.
It was another frustrating moment for Sundowns, whose growing urgency was matched by Wiliete’s increasingly disciplined defensive performance.
Wiliete Withstand Late Pressure to Complete the Upset
As the clock ticked down, Sundowns intensified their search for a winner, pushing more players into attacking positions and attempting to stretch the visitors’ defensive line.
The South African side enjoyed spells of sustained possession and repeatedly tested Wiliete’s back line, but the Angolan outfit remained organised and determined to protect its advantage.
Delgado continued to play a crucial role, while the visitors defended in numbers and looked for opportunities to threaten on the counterattack.
Despite their late pressure, Sundowns could not find the decisive second goal. The final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw on the night and a 1-1 aggregate score, sending Wiliete through to the group stage on away goals.
For the Angolan side, the result represented a landmark achievement. For Sundowns, it marked a deeply disappointing end to their continental title defence.
A Major Setback for the Defending Champions
Sundowns entered the competition as holders after winning the 2025-26 CAF Champions League title against Morocco’s AS FAR in the final. They had been widely regarded as one of the leading contenders to retain the trophy.
Their early elimination therefore represents a major setback for a club accustomed to competing at the highest level of African football.
The defeat also ended Sundowns’ run of reaching the Champions League group stage in each of the previous 11 editions, according to reports following the match.
Wiliete, by contrast, can celebrate a memorable qualification after overcoming one of the continent’s most established sides. Their defensive discipline, clinical use of a crucial mistake and goalkeeper’s performance proved decisive over the two legs.
The outcome serves as a reminder of the fine margins that define continental competition. Sundowns had the home advantage and made the stronger start, but Wiliete capitalised on its opportunity and held firm when it mattered most.
As the defending champions turn their attention back to domestic competition, Wiliete will prepare for the group stage with renewed confidence, having delivered one of the most remarkable results of the African football season.
