The Santiago Bernabéu is at the centre of a bitter institutional showdown as Real Madrid’s long-running feud with La Liga president Javier Tebas erupts into one of the fiercest exchanges of official statements in Spanish football, with the dispute now reaching Spain’s top sports authority.

The conflict intensified after Real Madrid called for Tebas to resign immediately from both his position as La Liga president and his role as a vice-president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Tebas responded by accusing the club’s leadership of intimidation and attempting to undermine Spain’s domestic competition.

The Spark: Comparisons with Nazi Propaganda

The latest and most serious escalation followed public comments by Tebas in which he compared the editorial approach of Real Madrid’s official television channel to the propaganda techniques employed by Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Germany’s minister of propaganda.

Tebas accused the channel of attempting to shape public opinion by consistently portraying Real Madrid as victims, selectively highlighting controversial refereeing decisions and repeatedly promoting a narrative designed to serve the club’s interests.

Although Tebas subsequently sought to clarify that his remarks referred to the mechanics of propaganda and repetition rather than Nazi ideology itself, his explanation did little to defuse the institutional crisis.

Real Madrid’s Response: Calls for Immediate Resignation

Real Madrid responded with a strongly worded official statement, describing Tebas’s comments as evidence of what the club considers a complete lack of impartiality, integrity and respect for the offices he holds.

The statement set out several key demands and criticisms:

  • Immediate resignation: Real Madrid called on Tebas to step down as La Liga president and RFEF vice-president, arguing that his conduct was incompatible with the responsibilities of those positions.
  • Failure to address the Negreira case: The club criticised Tebas for focusing his attacks on Real Madrid rather than helping to clarify the circumstances surrounding payments made by Barcelona to the former vice-president of Spain’s refereeing committee. Real Madrid has also turned to UEFA, seeking to protect the integrity of the competition.
  • Comprehensive refereeing reform: The club called for far-reaching changes to Spain’s refereeing system, as well as to the country’s football governance and disciplinary structures. It also demanded changes to the personnel who held positions of responsibility during the period in question.

Tebas Hits Back: ‘This Is Intimidation — You Want to Destroy La Liga’

Tebas was quick to respond, launching a fierce counterattack through his official account on X. He portrayed the confrontation as part of what he described as a 13-year campaign by Real Madrid to force him out of office.

His response centred on three main arguments:

  • An alternative to the Super League: Tebas accused Real Madrid’s leadership of seeking to damage domestic football in pursuit of objectives it had failed to achieve through its European Super League project.
  • Allegations of intimidation: He argued that the club’s latest statement amounted to intimidation, insisting that dressing such tactics up as a call for reform and renewal did not change their underlying nature.
  • A challenge over fixture scheduling: Tebas challenged Real Madrid to disclose how many times it had requested changes to the dates and kick-off times of its La Liga matches to accommodate events and concerts at the Santiago Bernabéu. He maintained that the league had approved many of those requests.

Spain’s National Sports Council Considers Disciplinary Action

The dispute has now moved beyond a public war of words and into the realm of potential institutional and legal consequences.

According to reports carried by Spanish newspaper Marca, Spain’s National Sports Council (Consejo Superior de Deportes, or CSD) is considering possible disciplinary measures and sanctions against Tebas over his use of comparisons with Nazi Germany when referring to a member club of La Liga.

Any formal action could add a new dimension to an already explosive dispute, placing the conduct of the league’s president under further scrutiny.

Mourinho Weighs In: ‘The Only Excuse Is Illness’

The controversy has also spilled into the press conference circuit, with Portuguese manager José Mourinho entering the fray ahead of Real Madrid’s anticipated La Liga meeting with Sevilla.

Mourinho delivered a pointed and sarcastic assessment of Tebas’s remarks, suggesting that the only possible excuse for his behaviour would be an illness.

He also called for the dispute to be kept within the confines of Spanish football’s internal affairs, warning against allowing the confrontation to damage the reputation of Spanish football abroad.

A Standoff with No Clear End in Sight

Relations between Real Madrid and Tebas appear to have reached an impasse, with neither side showing signs of backing down.

Attention is now turning to the National Sports Council and whether its review will lead to formal disciplinary proceedings against the La Liga president.

The outcome could have significant implications for the balance of power in Spanish football. The central question is whether the escalating confrontation will ultimately threaten Tebas’s position at the head of La Liga or instead strengthen his resolve in the face of Real Madrid’s sustained opposition.

For now, the battle between the Bernabéu hierarchy and the league’s leadership remains unresolved, with the consequences extending well beyond a war of words between two of Spanish football’s most powerful institutions.
